If you're having problems with an old sink trap, such as constant overflows and stubborn smells, make a fresh start with a new trap kit. Remove the access plug if there is one, and drain all the water out of the trap into a container. Using multi-grip pliers or a wrench, if necessary, loosen the couplings. I have an S-trap under my kitchen sink and really don't experience problems from siphoning because of it. The major disadvantage comes because "S" traps are usually used in locations where they are either not vented or poorly vented on the outflow side and
